4x4 vs AWD vs 4WD: All 17 Real 4x4s We Track Have One Thing No AWD Crossover Has

“4x4”, “4WD” and “AWD” get used as though they mean the same thing. They do not, and the difference is not marketing — it is a physical component that is either in the vehicle or isn’t.

We maintain a dataset of 17 serious 4x4 pickups and off-road SUVs — 16 of them body-on-frame, plus the monocoque Land Rover Defender — and a separate one of 28 electric and hybrid vehicles that includes several AWD crossovers. Comparing the two gives the cleanest answer to this question we have seen:

All 17 of the 4x4s have a dual-range transfer case. None of the AWD crossovers do.

That is the line. Everything else is detail.

Low range is the dividing line

A transfer case splits engine torque between the front and rear axles. A dual-range transfer case adds a second, much shorter set of gears — “low range”, usually marked 4L.

Low range multiplies torque and divides speed. It lets you crawl up a loose climb, ease down a steep descent on engine braking, and inch over obstacles without slipping the clutch or riding the brakes. It is the single feature that separates a vehicle built for terrain from one built for weather.

Every 4x4 in our dataset has it — from the ₱1,300,000 (~$21,300) Suzuki Jimny to the Land Cruiser 300 and the $65,000 Land Rover Defender. Note the Defender is the one monocoque here rather than ladder-frame, which traditionalists hold against it — but it still has the transfer case, and that is the test that matters. An AWD crossover — say a Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid with its electric on-demand all-wheel drive — has no transfer case at all. Its AWD exists to stop you spinning a wheel pulling out of a wet junction. That is a genuinely useful thing. It is not the same thing.

The three architectures, with real examples

Read any 4x4’s transfer-case notation and it tells you exactly what you can do with it. Across our 17 models, three patterns appear.

1. Part-time 4WD — 2H / 4H / 4L

The front and rear axles are locked together with no centre differential. Excellent off-road, but you must not use it on dry tarmac: with no centre diff to absorb the difference in how far each axle travels through a corner, the drivetrain binds. That is transmission wind-up, and it damages parts.

In our dataset: Toyota Hilux, Toyota Fortuner, Nissan Navara, Isuzu D-Max and Isuzu mu-X (both “Terrain Command”), Suzuki Jimny (“AllGrip Pro”), GWM Tank 300, Jeep Wrangler Rubicon (“Rock-Trac”, with a very low 4:1 low range).

Practical rule: engage 4H when the surface goes loose, disengage when you are back on grippy pavement.

2. Full-time / permanent 4WD

A centre differential sits between the axles and absorbs that speed difference, so four-wheel drive can stay engaged permanently, on any surface. Usually the centre diff can also be locked when you need the part-time behaviour.

In our dataset: Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and Land Cruiser 300 (both Torsen centre differential), Nissan Patrol, Land Rover Defender 110 (twin-speed transfer case with a locking centre differential).

3. Selectable — the best of both, marked 4A

The most useful arrangement for Philippine driving, and the one buyers most often overlook. These offer 2H for economy, a full-time/automatic mode usable on any surface, plus locked 4H and 4L for the rough.

In our dataset: Mitsubishi Montero Sport and Mitsubishi Triton (Super Select 4WD-II), Ford Ranger (on V6 models) and Ford Everest (4A), Ford Ranger Raptor.

Why it matters here specifically: in a rainy-season downpour, the road surface changes from grippy to treacherous and back every few hundred metres. With part-time 4WD you are constantly deciding whether to engage. With a 4A or Super Select system you simply leave it engaged and stop thinking about it. That is a real, everyday safety benefit that never shows up in a spec comparison.

Then there are diff locks — a separate question entirely

Four-wheel drive gets torque to both axles. It does nothing about what happens within an axle.

An open differential sends power to the wheel with the least grip. Lift one wheel off the ground and it spins uselessly while the wheel with traction gets nothing — the vehicle stops, in four-wheel drive, on a mild obstacle. A locking differential forces both wheels on that axle to turn together.

Sixteen of seventeen have at least a rear diff lock. The Jimny substitutes brake-based traction control, which brakes the spinning wheel to push torque across the axle. It works better than it sounds — and it is still not a locker.

So which do you actually need?

An AWD crossover is enough if your worst surface is a wet road, a gravel provincial turn-off, or a rough but essentially flat access track. It will be cheaper to buy, cheaper to fuel, and nicer to drive every day.

You need a real 4x4 if you face steep loose climbs, deep ruts, sand, or flooding. Low range and wading depth do work that no amount of clever AWD can substitute for.

And be honest about frequency. A 4x4 is a compromise the other 360 days of the year — heavier, thirstier, and firmer-riding when unladen. Plenty of people buy one for two trips a year they could have hired for.

The spec that gets misread

One number deserves a warning, because it is the one people rely on in a flood: ground clearance is not wading depth. They measure different things and they do not track each other in our data. The Nissan Patrol has 273 mm of clearance — near the top of the set — but quotes 700 mm of wading, less than the Ford Ranger’s 800 mm on 234 mm of clearance. And the Suzuki Jimny, with the best approach and departure angles of anything we track, quotes just 300 mm of wading.

Frequently asked questions

What is the actual difference between 4x4 and AWD?

The dividing line is low range. Every one of the 17 serious 4x4s in our dataset has a dual-range transfer case giving a second set of much shorter gears for slow, controlled off-road work. AWD crossovers do not have one — their all-wheel drive is for traction on wet roads, not for crawling up a rutted climb. Both send drive to four wheels; only one is geared for terrain.

Can I drive in 4WD on a dry paved road?

It depends on the system, and getting it wrong causes real damage. Part-time 4WD locks the front and rear axles together with no centre differential, so on high-grip surfaces the drivetrain binds — this is transmission wind-up, and it damages components. Full-time and permanent systems have a centre differential and are safe on any surface. Check whether your transfer case offers a 4A or full-time mode before you leave it engaged.

What do 2H, 4A, 4H and 4L mean?

2H is two-wheel drive, high range — normal road driving. 4H is four-wheel drive, high range, for loose surfaces at speed. 4L is four-wheel drive, low range — the crawler gears for steep, slow, technical work. 4A is automatic or permanent four-wheel drive, which can be used on any surface including dry tarmac because a centre differential absorbs the speed difference between axles.

Do I need a differential lock?

For serious off-road use it matters more than most buyers realise. An open differential sends power to the wheel with least grip, so one lifted wheel can stop you completely. A locking differential forces both wheels on that axle to turn together. Sixteen of the 17 4x4s we track have at least a rear diff lock; the Suzuki Jimny is the exception and uses brake-based traction control instead.

Is an AWD SUV enough for the Philippines?

For wet city roads, provincial highways and light unpaved access roads, usually yes — and an AWD crossover is cheaper to buy and run. You need a genuine 4x4 when you face deep ruts, steep loose climbs, sand, or serious flooding, where low range and wading depth do the work that AWD simply cannot.
