The 2026 electric & hybrid ranking
Ranked by value — US$ per km of range (see the box below), and re-sortable by price, range, charging speed, power, battery or seats. Filter by powertrain (BEV / hybrid / plug-in) or body type, or search by name. Prices are the starting (from) price; power is the headline figure for the model’s main variant (AWD and performance versions differ — noted on each model page). For the Range column: electric cars show driving range (EPA / WLTP / NEDC / CLTC — not interchangeable), plug-in hybrids show electric-only range, and hybrids show fuel economy.
US-market cars show US$ first; Philippine-market cars (BYD, MG) show ₱ first. Conversions are approximate at ≈₱61 = US$1 (mid-2026); exchange rates move, so treat the converted figures as ballpark.

- Plug-in hybrids are measured on electric-only range, so their $/km looks poor by construction — that is not a like-for-like comparison with an EV.
- Self-charging hybrids have no range figure to divide by, so they show “—” and sit at the bottom. That is missing data, not a bad score.
- 7 of 24 ranked vehicles are rated on an optimistic cycle (6 on NEDC, 1 on CLTC) — a bigger range number divides into the price more favourably, so these flatter their own $/km against EPA-rated rivals. Every row shows its standard, so check it before trusting the order.
- Note the current #1: the BYD Seagull is rated on CLTC, not EPA. Discount its range — and therefore its $/km — before comparing it with an EPA-rated car. On a like-for-like basis it would sit lower.

What is the best electric car in 2026?
There is no single winner — it depends on your budget and needs. For range-per-dollar and charging ease, the Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 5/6 lead the mainstream. What is the best cheap or budget EV?
The 2026 Nissan Leaf (from $29,990) is the cheapest new long-range EV in the US with a native NACS port. In the Philippines and other BYD/MG markets, the BYD Dolphin and MG4 are among the most affordable new EVs. All three keep running costs low.
What do EPA, WLTP, NEDC and CLTC range figures mean?
They are four different lab tests. EPA (US) is the most realistic; WLTP (Europe) is a bit optimistic; NEDC (older, used for some BYD/MG figures) is very optimistic; and CLTC (China) is the most optimistic of all. Never compare a CLTC or NEDC number directly against an EPA one — expect real-world range to sit well below WLTP, NEDC and especially CLTC claims, and below EPA in cold weather or at highway speed.
Are electric cars cheaper to run than petrol cars?
Usually yes. Home charging typically costs far less per km than petrol, and EVs need less routine maintenance — no oil changes, fewer moving parts, and brakes that last longer thanks to regenerative braking. The best way to know your own numbers is to track cost per km and per kWh in an app like Kotselog.
How much EV range do I actually need?
For most people, 250–300 miles (400–480 km) of EPA/WLTP range is plenty — the average driver covers well under 65 km a day. Bigger batteries cost more and add weight. Buy for your typical week plus the occasional longer trip, not for the rare worst case.
