How regenerative braking works
In a petrol car, braking throws away energy: the pads squeeze the rotors and turn your momentum into heat. An EV (and hybrid) does something cleverer. When you lift off the accelerator or press the brake, the electric motor runs in reverse, acting as a generator. The wheels spin the motor, that resistance slows the car, and the energy recovered flows back into the battery.
The result is two wins at once: you claw back a little range, and your friction brakes barely get used in normal driving. The conventional pads and rotors only step in for harder or emergency stops.
Why the brakes last so much longer
Because regen handles most everyday slowing, the pads and rotors wear very slowly. In practice EV brake pads commonly last two to four times longer than on a comparable petrol car — often 80,000–100,000 miles on city-driven EVs. For many owners, brakes stop being a routine replacement item at all.
One-pedal driving
Many EVs offer a strong regen or “one-pedal driving” mode: lift off and the car slows firmly, often to a complete stop, without touching the brake pedal. The catch: brakes that are too rested
Ironically, brakes that are hardly used bring their own small problems:

- Calipers can seize and rotors can rust if the friction brakes almost never engage. An occasional firmer stop and a periodic inspection keep everything moving freely.
