A hybrid is the right answer if you cannot charge at home
This is the deciding question, and it is not about the cars. If you have no driveway, no garage and no reliable charger at work, a full EV will be an ongoing inconvenience and a plug-in hybrid will run mostly on petrol anyway. A self-charging hybrid delivers most of the fuel saving with none of that friction.
City driving is where hybrids earn their keep
Hybrid systems recover energy under braking and run the engine only when it is efficient, so the worse your traffic, the bigger the gain over a conventional petrol SUV. On a long, steady motorway run the advantage narrows considerably — the engine is doing most of the work either way.
Check the AWD economy penalty before you commit
All-wheel-drive versions of hybrid SUVs consistently return lower economy than the front-drive versions, and the gap is often larger than buyers expect. If you do not genuinely need the traction, front-drive will be cheaper to buy and cheaper to run for the life of the car.

No. Self-charging hybrids (HEVs) keep their small battery topped up from the petrol engine and from regenerative braking. You never plug them in — you just add fuel. Only plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and full EVs need charging.
Are hybrid SUVs worth the extra cost over petrol?
Usually, if you drive a reasonable annual mileage and especially if much of it is in traffic. The fuel saving is largest in stop-start city driving, and lower brake wear plus strong resale narrow the gap further. On a low-mileage motorway commute the payback is slower.
How long do hybrid batteries last?
