Does an EV actually save you money?

What the answer depends on

Two numbers dominate everything else: how far you drive and where you charge. Servicing and insurance move the result by a few thousand pesos a year. Mileage and charging mix move it by tens of thousands, and they decide whether the break-even lands inside your ownership or past it entirely.

This is why a driver doing 8,000 km a year from a condo car park often never breaks even, while a Grab driver doing 60,000 km a year with a home charger breaks even in well under two years. Both are using the same calculator and both answers are correct.

What this calculator does not include

• Anything to do with borrowing. This tool compares what two cars cost to run and own with money already committed. It does not model interest, and it is not a way to work out what you can afford — that is a different question and not one this site answers.
• Battery replacement. Out-of-warranty pack replacement is a real risk and a large number. Most warranties run 8 years; if you plan to keep the car longer, that exposure sits outside this model.
• Your time. Charging away from home takes longer than filling a tank. Whether that matters is personal, and it is not a peso figure.
• Electricity price changes. Meralco's rate moves monthly and is held flat here, the same way the fuel price is.

Government incentives — read this before adding them yourself

Executive Order 12 removed tariffs on completely-built-up imported EVs; the zero rate runs to 2028. Battery EVs are exempt from excise tax under the TRAIN Law; hybrids pay half.

Executive Order 121, signed 29 July 2026, adopts the Electric Vehicle Incentive Strategy — up to ₱60 billion total, covering up to 40% of eligible startup costs for BEV manufacturing and 30% for hybrids, PHEVs and fuel-cell vehicles.

Important: These lower the sticker price of an EV relative to a world without them. They are not a rebate you receive — do not add them to a savings figure.

Can you rely on public charging?

As of February 2026 there were roughly 1,100 public charging stations nationwide, with about 1,600 charge points operational in early 2026 — against an industry target of 7,300 by 2028 and a CREVI roadmap target of 20,400. Deployment is concentrated in Metro Manila (Makati, Taguig, Mandaluyong) reaching Laguna and Pampanga.

In plain terms: if you live and drive inside Metro Manila the network is usable today. If you regularly drive to the provinces, plan around charging rather than assuming it, and be honest with yourself about whether that is a trade you want to make. Deployment has been running behind the published targets.
