How a PHEV works
A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) pairs a petrol engine with a bigger battery than a normal hybrid, one you charge from a socket. That gives a real electric-only range, typically around 30–80 km. The pattern in daily use:
- Battery has charge → the car runs on electricity, quiet and cheap.
- Battery depleted → the petrol engine takes over and it behaves like a regular hybrid.
So a short commute can be all-electric, while a long weekend drive uses petrol with no charging stops. It’s a genuine “best of both” — with one big condition.
The catch: you have to plug it in
A PHEV’s whole efficiency case rests on charging it regularly. Charged and driven within its electric range, it’s very cheap per km. Uncharged, it lugs a heavy battery around on the engine alone and can be less efficient than a normal hybrid — the worst of both worlds. Studies of real-world PHEV drivers repeatedly find that people who rarely charge see nothing like the advertised economy.
Working out the real running cost
Because a PHEV burns two “fuels,” its true cost per km is a blend of:
- Electricity for the electric miles — cheap, especially charged at home (see how to track EV charging costs).
- Petrol for everything beyond the battery’s range.
The only way to know your real figure is to track both and combine them. If most of your driving fits inside the electric range and you charge nightly, your effective cost per km can be excellent.
