A hybrid (HEV) is a petrol car and an electric car in one, so its maintenance is a blend of the two. The good news: most of it is familiar, and some of it is actually easier. Here’s what a hybrid needs and when.
The petrol-engine side (mostly normal)
Because a hybrid has a combustion engine, the core services still apply:
- Engine oil and filter — typically every 8,000–16,000 km (5,000–10,000 miles) or 6–12 months. See how often to change your oil. The engine may run less, but oil still degrades with time.
- Air and cabin filters, spark plugs, coolant, and the 12-volt battery — on the usual intervals from the maintenance schedule by mileage.
- Transmission/transaxle fluid where applicable — check your manual.
The hybrid-specific side
- Hybrid battery. Usually maintenance-free for the owner and covered by a long warranty (often ~8 years / 160,000 km). What helps it last: keeping the cooling system clear.
- Hybrid battery cooling. Many hybrids draw cabin air through a vent or a small fan to cool the battery pack. Some have a filter or intake that needs periodic cleaning — neglect it and the battery runs hotter and ages faster.
- Inverter coolant. Some hybrids have a separate coolant loop for the power electronics, with its own (long) change interval.
The part that gets easier: brakes
Hybrids use regenerative braking, so the friction brakes do less work and the pads and rotors often last much longer than on a pure petrol car. You still change brake fluid on time (it absorbs moisture regardless), and it’s worth having calipers checked so they don’t seize from light use.
