The regular Prius (HEV) never plugs in and returns up to 57 mpg — simplest and cheapest. The Prius Prime (PHEV) adds ~45 miles of electric-only range if you can charge at home, at a higher price.
Do you have to plug in a Toyota Prius?
No. The standard Prius is a self-charging hybrid — it recharges its battery through the engine and regenerative braking. Only the Prius Prime plug-in hybrid needs charging for its electric range.
