The 2026 third-generation car uses a 75 kWh LIQUID-COOLED pack. This is the single most important change in the Leaf's history and the reason its reputation deserves revisiting.
What real degradation data shows
The Leaf is the cautionary tale of EV battery degradation, and the data is specific: earlier air-cooled cars degrade far faster than liquid-cooled rivals. A 2015 Leaf has been measured at about 4.2% per year against roughly 2.3% for a 2015 Tesla Model S. In genuinely hot climates such as Phoenix, older Leafs shed 4–5% per year — around three times a liquid-cooled car enduring the same heat. The 2026 car addresses the root cause by adopting liquid cooling; that is an engineering change, not a marketing claim, but it is also new enough that long-run field data does not yet exist for it.
Reliability record
The older air-cooled packs are the origin of much of the general public anxiety about EV battery life. Judge the third-generation car on its cooling architecture rather than on the first generation's record — while accepting that the new pack has no long-term field history yet.

Nissan has one of the broadest conventional dealer networks of any EV brand, which is a real advantage in markets where newer entrants have thin coverage. The Leaf is also among the longest-serving mass-market EVs, so independent servicing knowledge is unusually deep.
