Toyota Fortuner vs Isuzu mu-X: the real trade-offs
Engine character
The Fortuner’s 2.8 GD-6 makes 201 hp and 500 Nm; the mu-X’s 3.0 makes 187 hp and 450 Nm. On the numbers the Toyota wins, but the Isuzu’s larger capacity delivers its torque in a lazier, less strained way that suits a loaded seven-seater on a long climb. The Isuzu is also known for excellent real-world fuel economy — worth several thousand pesos a year to a high-mileage family.
Towing and wading
The mu-X takes this clearly. It tows 3,500 kg braked against the Fortuner’s 3,100 kg, and wades 800 mm against 700 mm. If you pull a boat, a trailer or a caravan — or live somewhere that floods — the Isuzu is measurably the more capable tool, and the wading difference is not academic during a Philippine rainy season.
Off-road hardware
The mu-X edges it again: 235 mm of ground clearance against 225 mm, a marginally better approach angle, plus Rough Terrain Mode alongside the rear diff lock and low range. The Fortuner’s part-time 4WD and rear locker are perfectly capable, but the Isuzu gives you slightly more of everything that matters when the surface turns bad.
Cabin, tech and refinement
Both are plain next to a Ford Everest, but the Fortuner feels the more finished of the two, with better material choices and a more car-like driving position. The mu-X is functional and honest. Neither is a luxury SUV — that is not what body-on-frame is for — and both ride firmly when empty.

Buy the Isuzu mu-X if capability is what you are actually buying — it tows more, wades deeper, clears higher and costs less, and its 3.0 diesel is the one you want if you plan to keep the vehicle for a decade. Buy the Toyota Fortuner if resale value, dealer reach and the more polished cabin matter more to you than the last 400 kg of towing capacity.
