We keep a dataset of 28 electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles, with the range figure and — importantly — the test standard behind it recorded for every one. Running the Philippine-market filter over it surfaced something worth saying out loud:
Of the six EVs with a local peso SRP in our data, five quote an optimistic cycle — four on NEDC and one on CLTC, which is more generous still. Only one quotes WLTP.
That is not a scandal, and none of these are bad cars. But it means the range numbers on most PH electric-car material are not comparable with each other, let alone with what you will actually see on EDSA in August.
What you can actually buy here
Fourteen of the 28 vehicles we track list the Philippines among their markets. Eight carry a local peso SRP. Six of those are battery-electric, and they are the ones in the table below — the other two are BYD’s DM-i plug-in hybrids, which are covered further down.

All six are battery-electric. The test cycle is deliberately printed next to the range rather than in its own column — that is the pairing that matters.
BYD prices are the official Philippine SRP as of 28 July 2026 (entry variant where a model has several). At ≈₱61 = US$1 (mid-2026). Prices are the starting SRP and move often — confirm with a dealer.
Look at the top two rows together. The Seagull and the Dolphin both claim 405 km, and they are not the same claim: the Seagull’s is CLTC and the Dolphin’s is NEDC. Adjusted, the Seagull lands nearer 280 km and the Dolphin nearer 315 km — the cheaper car with the identical headline figure is the shorter-range one.
Also sold here but priced against the US market: the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y (both EPA-rated, both around 250 kW peak charging). On the electrified-but-not-electric side: the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid and RAV4 Hybrid, the Honda CR-V e:HEV, and the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.
Why the test cycle matters more than the number
Four laboratory cycles are in circulation worldwide, and they are not interchangeable. We pulled the differences apart in EPA vs WLTP vs NEDC, including roughly how to convert between them. All four now appear on cars sold here:
- EPA (United States) — the strictest. Closest to what you will actually see. Used by the Teslas sold here.
- WLTP (Europe) — moderately optimistic. Only the MG4 among the locally-priced cars.
- NEDC — the oldest and most generous of the European cycles. Commonly discounted 20–25% before comparing it with anything else.
- CLTC (China) — the most optimistic of the four. Commonly discounted 25–35%. It arrived on the local price list with the BYD Seagull, and you will meet it more often as imported Chinese models keep landing.

Apply that discount and the picture rearranges. These are our illustrative adjustments, not manufacturer figures — shown so you can see the effect, not so you can quote them:

Notice what happens to the MG4. On the showroom sheet it looks mid-pack against the Atto 3. Adjusted for the fact that it is the only one quoting the more conservative cycle, the gap narrows to almost nothing — and its 140 kW charging is nearly twice the Atto 3’s 80 kW.
This is the single most useful habit when shopping for an EV here: read the letters after the number. Every model page on our EV comparison hub states the standard beside the range, and the hub’s default ranking flags how many entries sit on NEDC precisely because it distorts any value comparison.
Then subtract Philippine conditions
Lab cycles aside, local reality takes its own cut, and it is not small:
- Heat. Air conditioning runs almost permanently here. It draws real power, and unlike an ICE car — where cabin heat is a by-product of the engine — in an EV every watt of cooling comes out of driving range.
- Traffic. This one cuts the other way and is genuinely good news. EVs are at their most efficient in stop-start crawling, where regenerative braking recovers energy and there is no idling loss. An EV suffers far less in Metro Manila traffic than a petrol car does.
- Highway speed. Sustained 100 km/h on NLEX or SLEX is where range disappears fastest, because aerodynamic drag rises sharply with speed.
Net effect: an EV used mostly for a congested city commute will get closer to its claimed figure than the same car used for regular provincial runs. That is the opposite of most people’s intuition.
The incentives most buyers miss
Under the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA, RA 11697), electrified vehicles get standing benefits that recur every year, not just at purchase:
- 30% off the MVUC for battery-electric vehicles, 15% for hybrids — applied at initial registration and at every renewal.
- Eight-year exemption from number-coding schemes for EVs.
- Priority processing at the LTO.
And one that follows from physics rather than legislation: a pure EV has no tailpipe, so there is no annual emission test. That removes a fee and an errand from your renewal every single year. A hybrid still has a petrol engine, so it still gets tested like any other car — worth knowing before you assume “electrified” means exempt.

Charging is the real constraint, not range
Among the PH-priced EVs, peak DC charging spans 40 kW to 150 kW — very nearly a four-fold difference in how long a motorway stop takes. The Seagull sits at the bottom at 40 kW; the Dolphin, Atto 3 and ZS EV all sit at or below 80 kW. That is perfectly fine for overnight home charging and genuinely slow on a long drive.
That is the honest hierarchy for a Philippine buyer:
- Can you charge where you park? If yes, almost everything else is negotiable. If no, an EV is a daily inconvenience regardless of specification.
- How far is your longest regular drive? Not your longest imaginable one.
- Then compare range — with the test cycle attached.
The plug-in hybrids
Two locally-priced cars in our data are not battery-electric at all: BYD’s DM-i plug-in hybrids. They matter here because they answer the objection that kills most Philippine EV purchases — what happens when you leave the city.

A DM-i drives electrically until the battery runs down, then a 1.5-litre petrol generator takes over. You can plug it in, but you never have to — which removes the provincial-charging problem entirely, at the cost of still owning an engine to service.
Two honest caveats. Both electric-range figures are NEDC, the second-most optimistic cycle, so apply the same 20–25% discount as everywhere else on this page: roughly 80 km and 55 km respectively. And BYD Philippines publishes no combined system output for the Sealion 5 and no peak charging rate for either, so we show neither rather than inferring them — worth asking a dealer about before you sign anything.
The trap with any plug-in hybrid is not charging it. Unplugged, it is a heavy hybrid carrying a battery it never uses, and the running-cost case disappears completely.

Frequently asked questions
How many electric cars can you actually buy in the Philippines?
Of the 28 electrified vehicles we track, 14 are sold in the Philippine market — 8 battery-electric and 6 hybrids or plug-in hybrids. Eight carry a local peso SRP: six battery-electric (the BYD Seagull, Dolphin, Atto 3 and Seal, and the MG4 and MG ZS EV) plus two BYD DM-i plug-in hybrids, the Sealion 5 and Sealion 6. The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are also sold here but are priced against the US market.
Why do Philippine EV range figures look so high?
Because most are quoted on optimistic laboratory cycles. Four of the six PH-priced EVs in our dataset use NEDC and one — the BYD Seagull — uses CLTC, which is more optimistic still. NEDC typically overstates real-world range by roughly 20–25% and CLTC by 25–35%, so a 480 km NEDC claim is realistically closer to 370 km. Only the MG4 quotes WLTP, which is meaningfully more conservative.
Do electric cars get discounts in the Philippines?
Yes, under the EVIDA law (RA 11697). Battery-electric vehicles get a 30% discount on the MVUC at every registration renewal, hybrids get 15%, and EVs are exempt from number-coding schemes for eight years. A pure EV also skips the annual emission test entirely, because there is no tailpipe to measure.
Is charging speed a problem for EVs sold in the Philippines?
It varies more than buyers expect. Among the PH-priced EVs in our dataset, peak DC charging ranges from 40 kW on the BYD Seagull to 150 kW on the BYD Seal — very nearly a four-fold difference in how long a road-trip stop takes. The Teslas sold here peak around 250 kW. For home charging overnight, none of this matters.
Which is the best value EV in the Philippines?
On raw pesos per kilometre of claimed range, the BYD Seagull leads the PH-priced group — but it is the one car in the set quoting CLTC, the most optimistic cycle of the four, so its lead is partly an artefact of the test it was measured on. That is exactly why the ranking is not like-for-like. The MG4's WLTP figure is the most trustworthy number in the set even though it looks less impressive.
