Decide how much range you actually need

Almost everyone overbuys here. If you charge at home and your longest regular drive is a commute, the cheapest car on this list will cover it several times over. Range only becomes the deciding factor if you regularly drive further than a single charge in a day and cannot easily stop. Buying 100 extra kilometres you use twice a year is expensive.

Check which test cycle the range figure uses

EPA, WLTP and NEDC numbers are not interchangeable. EPA is the most conservative and closest to real driving; WLTP is moderately optimistic; NEDC is the most optimistic and should be discounted by roughly 20–25% before you compare it with anything else. The table below states the standard for every model so you can compare like with like.

Charging speed matters more than range on long trips

A car that charges at 350 kW and one that charges at 80 kW can have identical range and completely different road-trip experiences. If you fast-charge regularly, weight charging speed heavily. If you charge at home overnight and rarely go far, it barely matters — and you can save real money by ignoring it.

Confirm it is actually sold where you live

This is a global list, and several models are region-specific. A car with no local dealer, no parts supply and no service network is not a realistic purchase however good the specification looks. Check availability before you fall for a spec sheet.

Budget for the charger, not just the car

A home charger installation is a real cost that rarely appears in comparisons, and it is the single biggest factor in whether EV ownership is cheap or merely convenient. Home electricity typically costs a fraction of public fast charging, so the installation usually pays for itself — but plan for it up front.

The longest-range pick on this page is calculated from our dataset and shown in the picks above — but read the test standard alongside it. An EPA figure and an NEDC figure are not comparable, and the NEDC number will overstate real-world range by roughly 20–25%.

How much does an electric SUV cost to run?

Charging at home is dramatically cheaper than public fast charging — typically around a third of the cost per kWh — so where you charge matters more than which SUV you buy. Servicing is also lower than an equivalent petrol SUV because there is no oil, no exhaust and far less brake wear thanks to regenerative braking.

Are electric SUVs good for families?
