But the Equinox EV meets US battery-sourcing and assembly rules, so qualifying buyers can take the full $7,500 federal credit — which the 2026 Model 3 and Model Y no longer attract. For an eligible US buyer that turns a $5,000 gap into something closer to $12,500. Outside the US, where the credit does not apply, the comparison is much tighter.
Range & efficiency
The Model Y wins on efficiency, not distance: 357 mi EPA from 79 kWh against the Equinox’s 319 mi from 85 kWh. Both are comfortably enough for almost any real journey. The Tesla will cost slightly less per mile in electricity; the Chevy gives up a little range for a much lower entry price.
Charging
The Model Y’s clearest advantage. ~250 kW peak on the Supercharger network versus ~150 kW for the Equinox. On a 10–80% stop that is roughly 25–30 minutes for the Tesla against closer to 40 for the Chevy. If you road-trip often, this is the cost of the savings.
Space & cabin
The Equinox EV is roomy and tech-forward with a large display and — importantly to many buyers — conventional controls, a stalk, and physical switches. The Model Y has the larger, flatter cargo area with underfloor storage and a frunk, plus the more minimalist cabin. Both seat five properly.
Software & risk
Tesla’s software and over-the-air update record is still the benchmark, and resale is stronger. GM’s infotainment has had early bugs, and the Equinox EV is essentially a North American offering, so parts and support outside the US and Canada are limited.
