The things that decide whether an EV is a good purchase rather than a good car: how long the battery is actually covered, what survives a change of owner, which chemistry you are buying, and what real fleet data says about degradation. Every figure here is documented and cited.
These are ownership decision guides built from checkable facts: manufacturer warranty terms, published fleet studies, battery chemistry, service-network reality. They are not road tests. Nobody at Kotselog has driven these cars, and you will find no opinion here on how any of them steers or rides — there are thousands of those reviews already, and we would only be guessing.
Warranty terms differ substantially by market and change over time. Every term below names the market it applies to. Confirm the terms for your own country in writing before you buy — a warranty is the kind of fact people make financial decisions on.

What actually transfers to a second owner
This is the most commonly misread part of an EV warranty, and it directly affects what a used example is worth.
Tesla's battery and drive unit warranty stays with the car and transfers to a subsequent owner, provided the ownership change is completed properly in Tesla's system. That materially supports used values.

This is the catch, and it matters at resale. The headline 10-year / 100,000-mile powertrain cover applies to the ORIGINAL owner only. A second owner receives the 5-year / 60,000-mile new-vehicle limited warranty, measured from the original in-service date — not a fresh term. If you are buying used, work out what is actually left rather than assuming the ten-year figure applies to you.

Battery chemistry — 8 of 11 covered models use LFP
Chemistry is not a detail. It changes how you should charge the car day to day, how it behaves in the cold, and how it ages.

Which EV has the best battery warranty?
It depends entirely on the market, which is why a single global answer is misleading. In the UK and EEA, BYD covers the Blade battery for 8 years or 250,000 km with a guaranteed 70% state of health — the highest mileage cap here. In the United States, Hyundai covers the Ioniq 5 battery for 10 years or 100,000 miles, the longest term by years. Tesla covers 8 years and 100,000–120,000 miles depending on trim, also with a 70% floor.
Does an EV warranty transfer to a second owner?
Usually the battery cover does, but not always the whole package, and the difference is worth real money. Tesla and BYD both transfer the balance of cover to a subsequent owner. Hyundai is the important exception in the US: its headline 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty applies to the original owner only, and a second owner gets the 5-year/60,000-mile term measured from the original in-service date.
How fast do EV batteries actually degrade?
Geotab analysed more than 22,700 EVs across 21 makes and models and found an average of 2.3% per year, leaving roughly 82% of original capacity at eight years. Heavy use of DC fast charging above 100 kW pushes that to as much as 3.0% per year, and hot climates add around 0.4 percentage points annually. Recurrent, tracking over 30,000 EVs, reports a battery replacement rate of just 0.3% on 2022-and-newer vehicles.
Is LFP better than a nickel-based battery?
They are different trade-offs rather than better or worse. LFP tolerates routine charging to 100% and has a strong thermal safety record, but has lower energy density and weaker cold-weather performance. Nickel-based chemistries give more range per kilogram but generally prefer an 80% daily charge ceiling. If you live somewhere cold, chemistry matters more than the brochure suggests.
Why does after-sales matter more than specs for some brands?
Because a warranty is only as good as the network obliged to honour it. For newer arrivals in a market, the questions that decide ownership are whether the brand has an official presence in your country at all, how far the nearest approved service point is, and what parts lead times look like. An excellent car that is unserviceable where you live is the wrong car.
