Lost battery capacity bars: what it means and when it is a warranty claim
Symptom: Capacity bars have disappeared from the gauge, or range has dropped noticeably
Often normal, or minor. Note when it happens; act if the pattern changes.
Gradual capacity loss is expected and is not a fault. What matters is the rate and whether you are still inside a capacity warranty, so the useful action is to record it properly rather than to react to it. A sudden step change, as opposed to a slow drift, is the exception worth chasing.
An EV traction battery runs at roughly 400–800 volts DC. That is lethal on contact, and unlike household AC it gives no involuntary "let go" reflex — a grip on a live conductor stays a grip. Working on it safely requires formal qualification, de-energisation, verified isolation and rated PPE (Class 0 gloves are rated to 1,000 V AC / 1,500 V DC). Everything under "safe to check" below leaves the high-voltage system alone. Everything under "qualified technician only" genuinely does mean only — it is not a liability formula.
Who this affects
The bar-based capacity gauge is a Nissan Leaf characteristic. The underlying issue — measurable capacity loss, accelerated by heat — applies to any EV, but the 12-bar gauge and the warranty threshold expressed in bars are specific to the Leaf.

The evidence
Nissan's US battery warranty covers the Leaf for 8 years / 100,000 miles and explicitly covers capacity loss below 9 of the 12 bars on the dashboard gauge. Each bar represents roughly 8.33% of capacity, which places the threshold somewhere near 66–75% rather than at a single stated percentage. On degradation rates, published comparisons put a 2015 (air-cooled) Leaf at roughly 4.2% per year against about 2.3% for a liquid-cooled contemporary, with 4–5% per year reported in genuinely hot climates such as Phoenix. Geotab's analysis of more than 22,700 EVs across 21 makes and models found an industry average of 2.3% per year.
Likely causes
- Normal calendar and cycle ageing, which every lithium pack experiences.
- Heat. Earlier Leafs use an air-cooled pack, which is materially more sensitive to high ambient temperatures than a liquid-cooled design — this is the single biggest driver of the Leaf's reputation. The 2026 third-generation car moves to a liquid-cooled 75 kWh pack, which addresses the root cause.
- Heavy reliance on DC fast charging. Geotab found vehicles frequently charging above 100 kW degrade at up to 3.0% per year, roughly double those mainly using slower charging.
- A genuine cell or module defect, which is what the warranty exists for — distinct from ordinary ageing.
How to tell them apart
A list of possible causes is only useful if you can narrow it down. These are the observations that discriminate — and they are the ones worth bringing to a shop.
- Gradual or sudden? Ordinary ageing is a slow drift over months and years. Losing a bar over a fortnight, or a range estimate that drops sharply and stays down, is the pattern that justifies a warranty conversation.
- Compare against age and mileage, not against when you bought it. A pack five years old with high mileage and heavy DC use is expected to sit below one that has been home-charged and lightly driven.
- Is it capacity or consumption? A cold snap, a roof box, new tyres, more highway driving or the aircon working harder all cut range without the pack having degraded at all. Check your logged kWh/100km over the same route before concluding anything.
- The guess-o-meter is not evidence. A range estimate reacts to recent driving; capacity bars and a proper state-of-health readout are the figures that matter in a warranty claim.
- Warranty thresholds are usually expressed as a percentage of original capacity retained. Find your threshold first — many owners are alarmed by degradation that is nowhere near a claimable level, and a few are entitled to a claim they never make.
✅ Safe to check yourself
These leave the high-voltage system completely alone.
- Count the bars on the capacity gauge and photograph it with the date visible. This is your evidence, and it costs nothing.
- Get a battery state-of-health readout. On a Leaf this is widely available via OBD-II dongles and apps and does not involve the high-voltage system directly — it is a data read, not an intervention.
- Track your real range over time rather than relying on the guess-o-meter. A logged trend is far more persuasive to a dealer than "it feels worse".
- Check your in-service date and mileage against the 8 years / 100,000 miles term, and against the 9-bar threshold. Whether you are inside the term is a question of records, not opinion.
- If you are buying used, ask for a state-of-health reading and the model year before anything else. On a Leaf, cooling type and age are the decisive questions.

Not a disclaimer — a genuine boundary. Knowing what sits on this side is also how you tell whether a quote is reasonable.
- Opening the pack, or any module-level testing, balancing or replacement.
- Any repair that involves disconnecting the high-voltage service disconnect.
- These require full HV qualification. Note also that pack serviceability varies — some designs allow module-level replacement, others are effectively replace-only, and that difference materially changes the repair cost.
Typical resolution
If capacity has fallen below the warranted threshold within the term, this is a warranty claim rather than a repair to pay for. The practical obstacle is usually evidence: dated capacity readings and a service history. If you are outside the term, options are living with reduced range, an independent pack or module refurbishment where the design and local specialists allow it, or replacement.
The exact percentage corresponding to the 9-bar threshold is not published as a single figure by Nissan; the 66–75% range above is derived from the stated 8.33%-per-bar arithmetic and should be treated as approximate. No degradation data exists yet for the 2026 liquid-cooled pack, because it is too new.
