Capability figures are the manufacturer’s quoted 4x4 figures for a named trim; power, price and angles vary by trim, market and options. Conversions are approximate at ≈₱61 = US$1 (mid-2026); exchange rates move, so treat the converted figures as ballpark. Ground clearance and power vary by trim/market (some GR-Sport and wide-track versions quote higher). Price is an approximate PH SRP for a 4x4 diesel variant.

Pros

  • Legendary durability and the strongest resale value in the class
  • Toyota service network reaches everywhere — cheap, easy parts
  • 3,500 kg braked towing and a genuine rear diff lock on 4x4 trims

Cons

  • Ride and cabin tech trail the newer Ranger and Triton
  • Base 2.4 is underpowered; the 2.8 is the one to get
  • Part-time 4WD only — no full-time all-surface mode

Key off-road features

  • Rear differential lock on 4x4 variants
  • Downhill Assist Control and Active Traction Control (A-TRC)
  • GR-Sport adds a wider track, retuned dampers and more power
  • 700 mm wading depth for flood and river crossings

Ownership: warranty, servicing and after-sales

What this section is. Documented, checkable ownership facts — warranty terms, published service intervals and costs, recall and court records, parts reality — each cited below. What it is not: a road test. We have not driven this vehicle, and there is no judgement here on how it rides or steers. Warranty and pricing differ by market and change; confirm locally before you buy.

Warranty

Philippines

3 years / 100,000 km, whichever comes first, on vehicles sold through authorised Toyota dealers

Service interval

Toyota Philippines specifies periodic maintenance every 5,000 km or 3 months, whichever comes first — a notably short interval by global standards, and one that reflects local operating conditions.

What servicing costs

Toyota PH publishes fixed-price service packages: the 10,000 km check-up is listed at ₱4,424.22 (~$73) and the 20,000 km check-up at ₱4,575.42 (~$75), at ≈₱61 = US$1. Costs vary by variant, and these are the published package prices rather than a quotation for your vehicle.

Known issues on record

Documented and adjudicated, though in Australia rather than the Philippines. Australia’s Federal Court found Toyota’s diesel particulate filter systems faulty in a class action covering 264,170 vehicles built between 1 October 2015 and 23 April 2020, across HiLux, Fortuner and Land Cruiser Prado fitted with the 2.4-litre 2GD-FTV or 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV turbo-diesel. The DPF did not always regenerate automatically, leading to clogging, white smoke and repeated warnings; a recall added a dashboard button allowing manual regeneration. Whether Philippine-market vehicles of the same build period and engines are affected in the same way is NOT established here — the finding is Australian and we have not verified a PH equivalent.

Parts and after-sales

Toyota has the deepest dealer and parts network of any brand in the Philippines, which is a substantial and often decisive part of the ownership case — particularly outside major cities. Independent servicing knowledge is also unusually deep given how common the vehicle is.

Resale

Widely regarded in the Philippine market as holding value unusually well, which is a genuine part of the ownership case. We have NOT sourced a credible published depreciation dataset for the PH market, so we are not putting a number on it here rather than quoting one we cannot stand behind.

What we could not verify

Philippine DPF applicability is unverified — the class-action finding is Australian. Published service prices cover the routine intervals only, not major services or wear items. Parts lead times outside Metro Manila are unverified.

Toyota Hilux FAQ

Is the Toyota Hilux good off-road?

Yes. With a low-range transfer case, a rear diff lock (on 4x4 trims), 216 mm of ground clearance and 700 mm wading depth, the Hilux handles serious tracks. Its real edge is dependability — it keeps going where fussier trucks stop.

How much can a Hilux tow?

Up to 3,500 kg braked on 4x4 diesel variants — enough for a large trailer, boat or another vehicle. Always stay within your GCM (gross combination mass).

Hilux or Ranger?

The Hilux wins on resale, reliability and service reach; the Ranger wins on power, ride comfort and cabin tech. See our full Hilux vs Ranger comparison.
