Battery chemistry
Varies by trim and factory of origin. Rear-drive Standard versions commonly use LFP cells, while Long Range and Performance versions use nickel-based cells. LFP tolerates routine charging to 100% better; nickel-based packs generally prefer an 80% daily ceiling.
What real degradation data shows
Geotab's 2026 study of more than 22,700 EVs across 21 makes and models puts average degradation at 2.3% per year — roughly 82% of original capacity still available at eight years. Cars relying heavily on DC fast charging above 100 kW degrade up to 3.0% per year, and hot climates add roughly 0.4 percentage points annually. Recurrent, tracking more than 30,000 EVs, reports a battery replacement rate of just 0.3% for 2022-and-newer vehicles.
After-sales and service network
Tesla sells and services directly rather than through franchised dealers, so your experience depends heavily on how close the nearest Tesla service centre is — that varies enormously by country and is the thing to check before buying. The Supercharger network remains the most reliable fast-charging experience in the markets where it is built out.
